Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
