A group of seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
